Pop Icon, Toyah Willcox Takes New Band On The Road<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The lady in the thigh-high boots and flaming basque-cum-breastplate is unmistakably Toyah Willcox \u2013 the stack-heeled wench with her back to camera requires a tad more explanation.<\/p>\n

\u201cAh yes,\u201d says Toyah, \u201cthat\u2019s John Wayne! He\u2019s actually a transvestite who owns a nightclub in Stoke-on-Trent \u2013 I met him because he\u2019s a Toyah impersonator and now he\u2019s my PA.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was there when we were making our video and the director said \u2018right John, get your gear on, we\u2019re filming you\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Toyah (the surname has been superfluous since It\u2019s A Mystery provided her breakthrough hit in 1981) supplies the information in a matter-of-fact tone which confirms that the bizarre is perfectly normal in her world…<\/p>\n

… Artists can sometimes get decidedly sniffy if interviewers attempt to pin down their sound, but Toyah, fortunately, warms to the suggestion that there is a Brechtian feel to The Humans\u2019 music.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a nice comparison,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s not 100 per cent because there\u2019s a lot of energy and we\u2019ll be playing some new stuff which is very Seattle grunge, but it is a listening experience rather than the \u2018come on everybody sing along\u2019 when I\u2019m out there as Toyah. And, yes, it is a bit dark and bleak \u2013 the Humans\u2019 world is permanently in winter!\u201d<\/p>\n

That being the case, long-term fans expecting a quick chorus of Thunder In The Mountains or Brave New World will be disappointed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will be doing some hits, but they\u2019re not Toyah hits,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s not a possibility because we are so peculiar \u2013 it\u2019s not a band set-up \u2013 it\u2019s two bass players and a guitar and vocals.\u201d<\/p>\n
