May 10, 2003: 'Daily Express' -We were all starving complains ousted Toyah
Daily Express - 10th May 03Toyah Willcox became the latest contestant to crash out of the show last night. But it was a close-run thing, with less than 1,000 votes in it.

She said she had enjoyed getting dirty but admitted the first week in the jungle had been hell.

"It was good but it's quite remarkable in there - you have to face so many issues," she said. "There were moments when we could have had a big gang fight but we were determined to stick together.

"The worst thing was the starvation. There must have been four days when we were high as kites on hunger. I enjoyed not bathing, not cleaning, just getting muddy."

Toyah said everyone was getting tired, particularly Phil Tufnell who was the day's leader and had to perform the daily bush tucker challenge.

Smoker Phil managed to grab four out of a possible six meals for the group while attached to a rubber bungee cord, but later admitted: "It takes all the puff out of you. I know it's been 30 a day for the last 25 years but ..."

Toyah revealed the rest of the camp were in no doubt whom they thought would win.

"We all know Phil ain't going," she said. "We all know that."

May 10, 2003: 'Daily Star' - NOW TOYAH IS HISTORY
Daily Star - 10th May 03NOW TOYAH IS HISTORY
This is the moment punk queen Toyah Willcox heard she was kicked out of the jungle by viewers last night. She admitted tensions were mounting in the camp.

The singer, whose 80s hits include It's A Mystery, became the fifth star to go. She confessed: "It's good to be out but there were times when we could have had a big gang fight. We were determined not to because we knew that's what the producers wanted." And she even told them she'd strip for some chocolate.

Toyah - who was up against Fash in a narrow public vote - added: "Things are getting bad in there now we're all leaving. I think the 'Three Musketeers' - Linda, Phil and Antony - are breaking down. If Linda goes they'll fall apart. She's the glue holding them together.

May 10, 2003: 'Daily Record' - Nast nip in the air as Toyah is booted
Daily Record - 10th May 03The ever unreliable Glasgow 'Daily Record' printed a story about the eviction today, without even using a picture of Toyah!

Camp split over fishy find
Toyah Willcox last night became the fifth celebrity to be booted out of the camp.

She just lost out to John Fashanu in the closest vote of the series so far.

Toyah made the walk of shame across the bridge to the outside world and hugged Ant and Dec. She said: "I'm glad to be out. The first week was hell. It was like another week in hell.

"The worst thing is the stravation. It was really horrible. I'm going straight to the nearest hotel now." But she added: "I enjoyed not bathing. I enjoyed not changing my clothes."

They also report on the crayfish story:

Earlier tempers were frayed as the group broke into an argument over an old crayfish.

Wayne Sleep and Toyah said they could not eat the crayfish - which Phil named it 'Sir Colin'. Toyah said: "He was looking for a mate, looking for love and look what he's got now - I'm a crayfish, get me out of here!

She added: "We've got to check if he's endangered or not. Will he survive out if water?"

After checking in the Bush Telegraph room, Toyah informed the group: "He's not protected and, if he has to be eaten, he has to be killed humanely. He's old, he's never seen a human and he'll be tough."

Toyah said some of the best fun during her 12 days came from getting filthy.

"I enjoyed not bathing, I enjoyed not changing my clothes and I enjoyed just getting muddy," she said.

"Everyone is exhausted. I think we are becoming anaemic because we are living off beans and rice."

But she had praise for celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson who "fed us out of nothing".

She added: "If he had failed in that we would have been on him like a pack of wolves."

Wilcox's eviction from the jungle camp means the group now consists of ex-footballer John Fashanu, dancer Wayne Sleep, and the clique of three, TV star Linda Barker, cricketer Phil Tufnell and Worrall-Thompson.

Of the five contestants left, one will be evicted on Saturday night and another tomorrow night, leaving three for the final on Monday night.

May 10, 2003: 'ITV News' - Toyah is finally free
ITV News - 10th May 03One-time punk songster Toyah Willcox became the fourth contestant to be voted out of the Australian Jungle on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!

Willcox, who had a string of chart hits in the 1980s, told presenters Ant and Dec that she and her fellow contestants had suffered from lack of food. "The worst thing was the starvation. We were high as a kite on hunger."

Although Willcox said it was difficult in the camp, she still enjoyed the experience.

Several of the contestants said they felt she had played a key role. Former footballer John Fashanu called her the "backbone" of the camp "family" while chef Antony Worral Thompson said she was a "natural leader".

Willcox, who has been an actress and television presenter, said she believed that cricketer Phil Tufnell will win the show, but that if interior decorator Linda Barker is voted off the remaining contestants will be in trouble.

"If Lindy goes they are in trouble. She is the gel that holds it all together."

Weather presenter Sian Lloyd was the first casualty of the show when she was voted out on Monday. She was followed by former EastEnders star Danniella Westbrook who quit in tears while on Wednesday Coronation Street actor Chris Bisson was voted out.

On Thursday model Catalina Guirado got her marching orders.

May 10, 2003: 'ITV Teletext' - Toyah glad to leave jungle show
Teletext - 10th May 03Toyah Willcox last night became the fifth celebrity to be kicked out of I'm A Celebrity....

Toyah was hugely relieved to leave the mud and rain, saying: "I am never going to starve myself again."

"It was remarkable in there because you have to face so many issues. There were many moments when we could have had a big fight. But the worst thing was the starvation.

"This is the longest I have been without my husband in 17 years of marriage." She tipped Phil Tufnell to go on to win the reality show.

Toyah and Fashanu received the fewest number of votes from the public on Friday. At the end Toyah had just 1,000 votes less than Fash.

Fash paid tribute to her, saying: "When we lose Toyah, we will lose all our ideas."

Showing his sensitive side he then explained why he does a daily routine of exercises, saying: "I saw my dad smoke himself to death with cigarettes. His fingers were all brown and they would stink. As a boy you remember all those things and, true to form, he died of cancer."

Phil Tufnell, who smokes 30 a day, replied: "Moderation is the key."

No point in looking a gift horse in the mouth though. The DVD has Toyah on the cover and, as well as highlights from series two, the entire DVD content from series one is also included.

To be eligible for this, make sure you buy the 'Sunday Mirror' tomorrow as the token from that is needed, along with four others.

May 10, 2003: 'The Sun' - See yah Toyah!
The Sun - 10th May 03Punk star Toyah Willcox was rocked on Friday night — when she was kicked out of I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here!

The ’80s singer beamed as she learned she had become the fourth star to be evicted from the camp.

And presenters Ant and Dec admitted there were only 1,000 votes between her and ex-soccer star John Fashanu.

All the other contestants immediately jumped to give blonde Toyah, 44, a hug.

She said: “I’m all right, I’m all right. I enjoyed not changing my clothes and getting muddy. But the first week was hell.”

After leaving the camp, Toyah told hosts Ant and Dec how she had missed her musician hubby Robert Fripp.

He was on hand to give her a welcome hug — and beaming Toyah said: “I’m going straight back to the hotel and ordering everything on the menu!”

Toyah said she had revelled in camp life and “enjoyed not having a bath, not changing my clothes — nothing mattered.”

Ant and Dec asked whether she had felt an outsider as a friendship developed between Phil Tufnell, Linda Barker and Antony Worrall Thompson.

Toyah replied: “I didn’t care. Phil is a delicate sort and Lindy gives him support. The closeness they have is like a brother and sister.

“I have experienced being an outsider at school and in theatre companies and I say let them get on with it. Why should I break up a friendship? There were moments when I went to bed early because they were really drunk, but what’s wrong with that! But I think Lindy is removing herself from the trio a bit, she’s feeling ready to go.”

Toyah said she had bonded with ballet dancer Wayne Sleep — and she backed cricket ace Phil to be king of the jungle.

Ant and Dec teased Toyah about her foul-smelling trial, where she had to wade into a stinking pool.

Toyah is free! She giggled: “When Daniella came back covered in bugs, all the men dived in to help her, but when I came back I was shooed out of camp and left on my own.”

Depressed Wayne admitted on Friday night the camp was totally divided — and Toyah’s departure could make the rift worse.

Phil, Linda and Antony have spent late nights drinking as the others head for bed. Wayne said: “I feel the camp is divided. I think the three of them get on very well together and they all want to win so you can draw your own conclusions from that.”

And Linda confirmed his fears when she said: “Phil, Antony and I work really well together. But I certainly hope nobody else thinks we have divided the group, though I would love it if it could just be the three of us at the end.”

Earlier Toyah had stood up to Phil, Fash and Linda, who wanted to eat a crayfish that chef Antony caught in their pool.

Antony, 51, worried they could get food poisoning if they ate the fish — while Wayne and Toyah thought it would be cruel to devour the creature.

As Changing Rooms designer Linda, 40, became more determined to get a fish dinner, Toyah said: “He was lonely and looking for a mate and that search for love has lost him his life. We will buy him off you.”

Wayne, 54, finally put his foot down and vowed to go on a starvation diet for three days if the crayfish was eaten. It was freed.

Toyah was also close to losing patience when ex-footballer Fash, 40, went for his daily workout watched by Linda.

Show rules state there must be always four people in camp — so Toyah, Antony, Wayne and Phil had to sit tight and wait.

On Fash’s return Antony warned him: “You’ll have to limit it to an hour because we can’t get out.”

Fash apologised and said: “I think maybe one or two people were a little bit ratty.”

The stars were reunited when they correctly answered a question to win goodies in the celebrity chest. They were asked how many women would prefer chocolate to sex — 40 per cent or 70 per cent.

Linda guessed 70 per cent and the group decided to go for her answer — winning salt, pepper, spices and hot sauce.

Antony laughed: “That’s b******s. I can’t believe that percentage.” Phil added: “They’re gagging for it.”

And Toyah joked: “For me, it’s 50/50, both at the same time preferably...with a few friends!”

May 10, 2003: 'Digital Spy' - Willcox bites the dust
Digital Spy - 9th May 03Toyah Willcox became the latest celebrity casualty this evening in ITV's ongoing I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here!

Willcox polled the fewest number of votes wanting her to stay in the jungle camp another day. Ant and Dec announced the result to the group just after 6.45am local time Saturday (9.45pm Friday UK); within minutes Willcox had left the camp for the last time and rejoined the pair in the studio.

"I'm so glad to be out," she said. "The first week was hell. The worst part about it was the starvation. We had about four days where we were all were high as a kite on hunger. It was good fun though. I enjoyed not bathing, I enjoyed not changing my clothes and just getting muddy, really."

Just five are now remaining, but only four will make it through tomorrow as another is eliminated.

She was picked to dive into the foul-smelling swamp after moaning that she was desperate to do her first Bush Tucker Trial.

And as hosts Ant and Dec - wearing masks because of the stench - looked on, Toyah waded through the murky waters to earn five meals for her pals. She said afterwards: "It was the grossest thing I have ever experienced."

May 9, 2003: Toyah in the papers
In the papers'Daily Star' (Friday 9th May): TOYAH'S HOT TIP: Bookies William Hill have taken a flurry of punts on Toyah Willcox to win I'm A Celebrity, with bets of up to £100 reducing her odds to 12-1. Phil Tufnell is still favourite at 4-7.

'Daily Record' (Thursday 8th May): Toyah, washing her clothes, once got caught short on stage.

'Daily Mirror' (Thursday 8th May): Serach: Toyah takes the challenge

'The Sun' (Thursday 8th May): Bottoms Up: Toyah puts cream on Wayne's bites. Last night unlucky Toyah became nurse Willcox - after mosquitoes made a meal of Wayne Sleep's rear. She found herself dabbing lotion on the ballet dancer's backside to ease the pain of the beastie bites. Poor Toyah, chosen for a Bushtucker Trial, had to rummage in a pool of mud for stars to swap for rations - while hosts Ant and Dec sat at a table scoffing tea and scones off bone china.

'The Sun' (Friday 9th May): Former punk singer Toyah Willcox, 44, bathed Wayne Sleep's foot and ex-footballer John Fashanu helped bandage it - while Changing Rooms star Linda Barker made a crutch. Toyah said: "To watch it was hysterical but as a dancer those feet are his livelihood."

'Metro' (Friday 9th May): Toyah took on the dreaded Bush Tucker Trial in which she had to fish around in a stinking bog to look for meal tokens. Presenter Ant warned: "It stinks but it will get worse. Do you want to do it?" She replied: "I have been in showbiz for 25 years, I'm used to grovelling in s***."

May 9, 2003: Nurse Toyah
Toyah and WayneSurely one of the strangest sights from I'm A Celebrity ..., and possibly any other TV show, this week was Toyah "seeing to" Wayne Sleep's bottom!? He was suffering from mosquito bites and after Toyah's tender loving care, he was heard to say: "That's what friends are for"!

Poor Wayne is slowly falling apart, he also hurt his leg while jumping up and down on his bed, and after seeing the doc in the Bush Telegraph he announced that "Nurse Toyah" would be looking after him - again!!

Last night saw Catalina being evicted from the camp, leaving six happy campers behind. Toyah and Linda Barker are now the only females left in the camp. Catalina was asked on This Morning who her favourite in the camp was and she replied: "I really love Toyah."

Earlier today Toyah saved a crayfish, quickly christened Colin, from being cooked for the group's dinner. She even offered money as Linda Barker and Phil Tufnell circled the poor thing and eyeing it up suspicously; "Delicious," enthused Linda!

May 9, 2003: 'This Is Worcester' - Tense Toyah faces future
A tense Toyah Willcox faced a nail-biting time in the jungle last night as she narrowly avoided being the third contestant to be voted out of the jungle.

But viewers decided they could take no more of Catalina Guirado's pouting and removed her instead.

It was the first time Toyah, who lives in Pershore, had been one of the two told they had polled the least number of votes.

Earlier she had made a plea to viewers in the Bush Telegraph to keep her in the show. "I'm a fiery b***** and I haven't had the chance to show that side of me," she said.

The celebrities were also asked who they thought should leave.

Toyah, 44, chose footballer John Fashanu. But two of the other contestants picked her.

Chef Anthony Worrall Thompson said she wanted to go because she was missing her musician husband, Robert Fripp.

Cricketer Phil Tufnell chose her initially, saying he could not think of a reason why, then changed his mind and plumped for Catalina.

After leaving the jungle, Catalina denied rumours of romance between her and ex-Corrie star Chris Bisson.

Tufnell is still the bookies' favourite to be crowned king of the jungle, at 4-7, but William Hill reported a flurry of bets on Toyah to win. Bets of up to £100 reduced her odds to 12-1.

May 9, 2003: 'Daily Record' - TOYAH CHASES PHIL AS BOOKIES' FAVOURITE
Bookies William Hill say they've had a flurry of bets for Toyah Willcox, with punters placing up to £100 on the former punk singer to win the show.

After being tipped by yesterday's leaver Chris to win, her odds have been cut from 16-1 to 12-1 behind hot favourite Phil Tufnell at 4-7, Linda Barker at 7-2, Antony at 9-1 and Wayne at 10-1.

Spokeswoman Jennie Prest said: "Toyah was the favourite when we first opened the book, but was soon overtaken by Phil and she seemed a bit quiet during the first week.

"However, she has come in to her own since doing her first trial and support for her may mean the final three may not be as clear cut as thought."

Full odds: 4-7 Phil Tufnell, 7-2 Linda Barker, 9-1 Antony Worrall Thompson, 10-1 Wayne Sleep, 12-1 Toyah Willcox, 16-1 John Fashanu, 40-1 Catalina Guirado.

May 9, 2003: 'William Hill' - Toyah newsy bits!
TOYAH TIPPED TO WIN JUNGLE WAR
William Hill have seen a flurry of bets for Toyah Willcox in I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here today, with punters placing up to £100 on the ex punk singer to win the show. After being tipped by yesterday’s leaver Chris to win she is cut from 16-1 to 12-1 behind hot favourite Phil Tufnell at 4-7, Linda Barker at 7-2, Antony at 9-1 and Wayne at 10-1. Hills spokeswoman Jennie Prest said, “Toyah was the favourite when we first opened the book, but was soon overtaken by Phil and she seemed a bit quiet during the first week. However she has come in to her own since doing her first trial and support for her may mean the final three may not be as clear cut as the betting first suggested.”

HILLS BET to win I’m A Celebrity, Get me Out Of Here: 4-7 Phil Tufnell, 7-2 Linda Barker, 9-1 Antony Worrall Thompson, 10-1 Wayne Sleep, 12-1 Toyah Willcox, 16-1 John Fashanu, 40-1 Catalina Guirado

GAMBLE FOR TOYAH, BUT SHE ONLY JUST STAYS.........
Despite the money for Toyah earlier in the day, according to William Hill punters it will be between Linda and Phil as the final two on Monday night. The third place spot is less clear, with Antony drifting out dramatically to 11-1 and the next couple of evictions will be hard to predict.

Hills spokeswoman Jennie Prest said, “Usually the betting gives a good indication of the support for the contestants and both Phil and Linda have been heavily backed. There was a gamble for Toyah today and she was cut from 16-1 to 12-1, but it looks like she only just missed packing her bags tonight and her supporters will need to get on the phones tomorrow!”

HILLS BET to win I’m A Celebrity, Get me Out Of Here: 1-2 Phil Tufnell, 3-1 Linda Barker, 11-1 Antony Worrall Thompson, Wayne Sleep, 12-1 Toyah Willcox, 14-1 John Fashanu.
