Daily Mail: Toyah Guests On Loose Women For Halloween

November 1st, 2023

Toyah guested on yesterday’s Loose Women Halloween Special, on ITV, with the interview being covered today by the Daily Mail.

Pop 80s icon Toyah Willcox, 65, claims violent ghosts called George and Mary are haunting her house as she recalls the ‘terrifying’ time she was ‘exorcised’ as a teenager

Toyah Willcox has claimed violent ghosts are haunting her house – as she recalled the time she was ‘exorcised’ as a teenager.

The 80s icon, now 65, appeared on the Halloween special of Loose Women on Tuesday alongside Olivia Atwood, Kaye Adams, Nadia Sawalha and Jane Moore.

Toyah spoke up about her experiences of ‘paranormal activity’ in her Worcestershire home, where she has lived for over 20 years.

She told the eerie story as she sat in front of a smoking cauldron for the spooky episode dressed as a black witches’ cat, complete with a belted jumpsuit and furry ears.

The I Want To Be Free singer said she and her husband, rock musician Robert Fripp, had been ‘invited’ to live in the house by ghosts.

She revealed that one of her resident ghouls named George has become so violent that she has begun to ‘attack’ her friends on numerous occasions.

Toyah explained: ‘George has never bothered me but he’s attacked my hairdresser, he’s attacked friends at dinner parties. I’ve never been afraid.

‘It all started to kick off when we would have dinner parties. Our ghosts do not like me when men come into the house something will happen.’

Daily Mail: Review – Toyah – Whitty Theatre, Wokingham

January 30th, 2022

Now here’s a super trouper: Toyah’s voice is glowing with energy as she charms audiences with her snappy and uplifting Posh Pop

The 1980s are having a moment. As several of today’s young stars revive the sound of synth-pop, a decade that was once derided is beginning to resemble a golden age.

Its music scene was a flourishing ecosystem, full of distinctive creatures from Sade to the late lamented Meat Loaf. Every week on Top Of The Pops they brought us all together to gawp or giggle at them. Younger readers may not believe this, but we even had a serious prime minister.

One of the most 1980s things about the 1980s was the annual vote for the Most Fanciable Human Beings, as chosen by readers of Smash Hits. In December 1981 the male winner was Adam Ant. The female one, seeing off Kim Wilde and Debbie Harry, was Toyah Willcox. ‘Oh God,’ she said. ‘I never expected that.’ Forty years on, she takes the stage in the unlikely setting of a Berkshire boarding school. The Whitty Theatre at Luckley House School is small but perfectly formed, and so, at 63, is Toyah.

Looking around at the audience, I find myself wondering if The Oldie magazine has a readers’ poll. As a singer, actress and TV presenter, Toyah is a super trouper: you could get exhausted just from reading her Wikipedia page.

Undaunted by lockdown, she formed a bubble at home in Worcestershire with her husband Robert Fripp, the legendary King Crimson guitarist, and her co-writer Simon Darlow. The resulting album, Posh Pop, put Toyah back in the Top 30 for the first time since 1984.

On the side, she entertained herself and her fans with Toyah & Robert’s Sunday Lunch, a series of YouTube videos. Each one is a jokey cover version of a classic, from The Who’s My Generation to The Undertones’ Teenage Kicks.

Daily Mail: A Bit Of A Brum Do For Pop Star Toyah

October 13th, 2020

BBC’s warning is a bit of a Brum do for pop star Toyah

Singer Toyah Willcox, who had a hit in the Eighties with It’s A Mystery, is baffled as to why the BBC slapped a warning on episodes of Brum, the harmless BBC children’s show she narrated.

A notice on iPlayer repeats told viewers the series may reflect out-of-date ‘language and attitudes of the Nineties’.

The flame-haired singer tells me: ‘I can’t think why they did that. Was it because of the Birmingham accent? Is it sexist in some way? I’m sure we never impersonated a black person.’ Toyah adds: ‘I always refused to do anything if it was offensive. Brum was written by Anne Wood who made Teletubbies and she was on top of all that sort of thing.’

The BBC says the notice was added in ‘error’ and has been removed from Brum episodes. Perhaps it is the BBC, with its determination to censor TV classics, that is out of touch with today’s audiences?

Toyah & Leslie Ash Go Back In Time! *SPOILERS*

October 8th, 2019

*SPOILERS* Okay, this is officially being kept under wraps currently and I don’t want to be a spoilsport, but as there have been set reports in at least half a dozen UK tabloids over the past few days I thought it made sense to include something…

Leslie Ash, 59, goes back in time on set of Quadrophenia sequel as she sports vintage houndstooth dress alongside co-star Toyah Willcox, 61

The stars of Quadrophenia celebrated the 40th anniversary of the cult classic last month at Coventry’s Comic Con. And now Leslie Ash, 59, was spotted on set of To Be Someone, a follow-up based on the original, in Stevenage earlier this week alongside her co-star Toyah Willcox, 61, who were both clad in threads inspired-by yesteryear. Men Behaving Badly star Leslie, who played Steph in the 1979 drama, slipped into a monochrome houndstooth mini dress and wrapped up in a padded black jacket in between takes.

Following Leslie’s lead, Toyah, who played Monkey in the original, looked chic in a maroon floral midi dress, which she teamed with a pink pointed pump. The eighties singer, who is set to play Bunny in the new installment, continued her retro-inspired appearance with a pair of cat-eye black shades and worked her shoulder-length hair into a sleek style.

Also filming on set was Mark Wingett, who played Dave in the original, while surprisingly Dr Alex George was seen on set, clad in his sixties-inspired wardrobe.

Daily Mail: Toyah – My Life Through A Lens

June 16th, 2019

My life through a lens: Singer and actress Toyah Willcox, 61, reveals the stories behind her favourite snaps

Celebrities share the stories behind their favourite photographs. This week it’s singer and actress Toyah Willcox, 61

1960: I love this picture of me at home in Birmingham. I’m naturally bossy and independent, and even then, aged about two, I had attitude. I never identified with being female and would physically fight my mother, Barbara, if she tried to put dresses on me. I wanted to play war and used to climb mountains and jump off cliffs. I was always hurting myself by doing idiotic things, which upset Mum a lot

1978: When I auditioned for the part of Bessie Watty in the film The Corn Is Green, I hid my bright-pink punk hair under a wig. But when I was cast and returned without it, the director wasn’t best pleased. Katharine Hepburn was the film’s main star. She would run her fingers through my hair and say, ‘I wish I could have done this at your age.’

Daily Mail: The One Lesson I’ve Learned From Life

February 26th, 2018

dmail18aThe one lesson I’ve learned from life: Toyah Willcox on how you can have the same waist at 60 as you did when you were 23!

Toyah Willcox, 59, shot to fame in the Seventies as a punk singer and actress / She revealed how she spent the past three months overhauling her lifestyle / She says a tailored diet helped her lose weight and improved her energy levels

This year I turn 60, which seems astonishing to me. Yet I’ve never been much of a conformist and I see no reason to become a little old lady. I’ve realised each decade has its own purpose and, in anticipation of my seventh, I’ve spent the past three months overhauling my lifestyle.

Today I have the same waist measurement I had at 23. My energy levels are through the roof, which is good because I’m still playing festivals and I’m known for the energy of my performance. This time last year I felt very different. I was physically and mentally sluggish. I was neither as bright nor as quick as I used to be and I was unhappy with my body shape. But I don’t think it’s inevitable everything should thicken and sag, and I wasn’t willing to watch it happen.

So my husband and I decided to take control of the way we were ageing. We went to the Wildmoor Spa in Stratford to see a Harley Street specialist in DNA. We had ours closely analysed for dietary intolerances and genetic traits that influence the way we process food. Results in, we were given tailored diets to follow. It’s been a major commitment of both money and willpower. I’ve cut out wheat, dairy and all processed foods, but my husband has different rules, so though we cook together, we have different meals. At first, I lost weight because I couldn’t find much to eat, especially on restaurant menus. And I missed cake.

Daily Mail: Inside The Head Of… Toyah Willcox

August 7th, 2017

dailymail17e‘A couple tried to kidnap my sister… was it Brady and Hindley?’ Inside the head of… Toyah Willcox

Eighties punk singer and actress Toyah Willcox, 59, has eight top 40 singles to her name. She is married to King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp, 71.

What is your earliest memory?

My mother putting a thick nappy on me. I used to deliberately hold everything in until she had done it, then would let loose. I was very naughty, even as a baby.

What sort of child were you?

I was completely unconventional in everything, which my mother found very difficult. I was a huge tomboy.

What has been your biggest achievement?

In 2010 I had to learn to walk again when I had my legs made the same length, after living with one leg two inches longer than the other until the age of 51.

Daily Mail: Toyah Answers Our Most Probing Questions

February 20th, 2017

dailymail17d‘People expect me to be tall after seeing me with that big hair’: Toyah Willcox gives her definitive answers to our most probing questions

We ask a celebrity a set of devilishly probing questions – and only accept THE definitive answer. This week it’s actress and singer Toyah Willcox’s turn

The prized possession you value above all others… My notebooks. I think very fast and visually and I have to write down an idea right away or it will be lost forever.

The biggest regret you wish you could amend… Not learning the piano and guitar when I was really young. The height of a child’s learning is before ten, so I missed out.

The book that holds an everlasting resonance… Keith Richards’ autobiography Life. I love how he’s lived life to the full on his own terms.

The priority activity if you were the Invisible Woman for a day… I’d steal the fat cats’ bonuses and pay off all student loans.

Daily Mail: Toyah Willcox Stuns On Stage

January 31st, 2017

dailymail17aToyah featured in another slightly odd article by the Daily Mail yesterday. A great selection of photos, though, from Saturday’s Loving The 80s gig in Warrington.

Toyah Willcox, 58, puts on an eye-popping display as she slips into figure-flaunting one-piece for performance

Her punk sartorial displays became iconic throughout the eighties.

Although working a more demure style three decades on, singer Toyah Willcox still managed to pay tribute to her racy ensembles of yesteryear as she stepped out in a very revealing blue body on Saturday. The 58-year-old songstress was sure to flaunt her ample assets in the figure-flaunting number as she performed her classic Loving The 80’s at Parr Hall in Warrington.

The jersey cobalt blue one-piece hinted at her undergarments as she wowed the crowds with her vocal talents while showcasing her petite frame in a waist cinching navy midi skirt. Not aware of her ample display, she continued her quirky style as she accessorised her stage attire with head-turning gold cuffs that worked their way up her forearms, while wrapping a matching futuristic collar that rested above her bust. Adding height to her diminutive frame, she slipped on a pair of black heeled boots alongside her black denier tights.

Despite being known for her ever changing ‘do in the eighties, Toyah left her glossy locks blonde for the evening’s proceedings as her trademark fringe accentuated her youthful complexion. Toyah completed her beauty look with a dusting of bronzer across her cheeks while she worked a dramatic smokey eye for the electrifying performance. The Anthem hitmaker’s appearance comes after she revealed the unorthdox secret to keeping her 30 year marriage alive, admitting that she and her husband have separate houses.

DM/Event: Toyah Willcox Reveals Her Cultural Favourites

October 10th, 2016

dmrk13a‘Of current artists, I love FKA Twigs. She blows me away’: Punk queen Toyah Willcox reveals her cultural favourites

Which former punk queen’s taste ranges from Bilbo Baggins to Bill and Ben, from Henry V to Half A Sixpence? It’s a mystery no more…

My movie magic

Growing up in Birmingham, my mum would take my sister, brother and me to see musicals like The Sound Of Music, Half A Sixpence, or My Fair Lady at the big theatres. They were very formative cinematic experiences.

A film I can watch over and over again is the 2007 Sean Penn-directed movie, Into The Wild. I am passionate about hill-walking, and going off into nature on my own.

Daily Mail: Toyah Talks Clothes & Fashion

September 9th, 2016

Make the most of your figure: Pink cap-sleeve midi dress and purple court shoes, £195, from LK Bennett – This beautifully made dress holds you in all the right places. It oozes sex appeal without being too revealing. Cocktails anyone?

Don’t flaunt your cleavage: Bell sleeve dress from Zara; suede court shoes, £195, from LK Bennett – I love the design— it’s both Swinging Sixties and New Millennium. I would wear it to a posh lunch with a chunky necklace of bright yellow citrine.

dailymail16c

Never go too short: Dress, from Précis; pearl button cardigan, £19.99, from Zara; courts, £165, from Russell and Bromley – This is my least favourite. It’s so formal I feel like a headmistress in it.

Be glamourous 24 hours a day: Graphic print dress, from Biba at House of Fraser, gold sandals, £275, from Russell and Bromley – I firmly believe we can be glamorous 24/7, and this dress proves it. It’s chic, comfy and not too showy for any occasion from the school run to the opera. Just gorgeous.

Show off your waist: Paisley print blouse, £29.99, burgundy pencil skirt, £29.99, both from Zara. Green suede courts, £75, from Dune – As a working woman I could only wear this if I were playing princess for the day. The shoes are gorgeous — but just too high to be practical.

Daily Mail: How To Be Noticed After 50?

September 8th, 2016

dailymail16bHow to be noticed after 50? Dress like a lady! Eighties punk Toyah Willcox reveals the secrets of her ladylike look

Toyah Willcox was a punk singer in the Eighties, and dressed to match | But at 58 she’s discovered that the best way to be noticed is to be feminine | She demonstrate her newfound love of skirts, dresses and subtlety

By Toyah Willcox For The Daily Mail

Back in my Eighties heyday as a singer, I wouldn’t have been caught dead in anything pretty or ladylike. The only thing remotely pink from this punk era was my hair.

But, at the age of 58, I’ve discovered a style secret which would leave the old rebellious Toyah reeling. The best way for me to be noticed isn’t to be outrageous. It’s to be feminine.

The clothes that made me famous wouldn’t suit me now. And that’s why I’ve decided to get rid of my old wardrobe. Some items are going to the Victoria and Albert Museum. The rest I am selling in aid of charity.

They are joyous clothes, but these days, I have a new look. I still, however, want to be noticed and look exciting.
