Wolverhampton What's On:
Dick Whittngton: The Wolverhampton Grand
pantomime this year is so eclectic,
its impossible to pin it down.
Panto has to be all things to all people,
of course, to keep everyone happy
and last nights full house was
utterly joyous. But what they saw (had
they realised it) was akin to a
geological cross-section of the history
of pantomime; ranging from gags as old as

Dick
Whittington ~ Wolverhampton Grand Theatre
Panto season has well and truly started
in the midlands, oh yes it has! What
better way to kick off the festivities
than with a trip to the Wolverhampton
Grand Theatre on the theatres 125th
birthday?
...Ian Adams (writer, director and Dame)
should be glowing with pride at such a
spectacular triumph. Hes a seasoned
pantomime performer which shines through,
however the talent he clearly possesses
as far as writing and direction is
concerned was not lost on me. Aaron James
was on top comedy form as Jack, his
impersonations alone were outstanding.
Jeffrey Holland was a perfect choice for
Alderman Fitzwarren, bringing his usual
exceptional stage presence to the role.
His energy is incredible and did cause me
to wonder if he might still be able to
play the Dame, a character I know he has
played wonderfully many times in the
past.
Its
undeniable that the effervescent and
incomparable Su Pollard stole the show as
Queen Rat. What vocal ability! I loved
her comedic take on the villainous
character, she remains a force to be
reckoned with for all the right reasons.
As a Hi De Hi! fan myself, the reference
to the show (which was fitting given both
Pollard and Hollands presence in
the cast) made my night.

Birmingham Mail: Dick Whittington Review
Review:
Dick Whittington brings panto fun to
Wolverhampton Grand Theatre
The hilarious show stars Ryan Thomas and
Su Pollard
Utterly bonkers - that's how I'd sum up
this year's pantomime at Wolverhampton
Grand Theatre.
Dick Whittington is a bizarre rags to
riches tale, which sees the hero arrive
in London, acquire a talking cat, take on
Queen Rat to rid the city of rodents and
become mayor. Oh, and there's a stormy
sea trip to Morocco thrown in there too.
... Corrie's Ryan Thomas was pleasantly
surprising as the Dick, while Hi-de-Hi!
star Su Pollard pulled a blinder as the
evil Queen Rat.

Grand's
Dick takes the festive season to new
Hi-de-heights
There was a great atmosphere at the
Wolverhampton Grand as the official
opening night also marked 125 years to
the day the theatre first opened its
doors.
The Grand really is quite a gem of a
theatre, splenderously appointed, warm
and welcoming and home to some wonderful
productions.
Dick Whittington is
splenderously staged by Qdos
Entertainment, with one lavish set after
another appearing it was like
gazing down a kaleidoscope and quite
rightly, accompanied by an equally lush,
never-ending parade of frocks.

Song,
dance and celebrity silliness: Dick
Whittington, Wolverhampton Grand Theatre
- Review
It is a delight for all the family - from
the young ones all the way up to the
grandparents in the audience.
... Su is a delight as the baddie. She is
scary yet amusing and provides many of
the comedy moments throughout the show,
prompting plenty of panto boos from the
audience. A favourite scene is when she
is joined by a giant rat which takes over
the whole stage and comes out over the
audience, scaring plenty of youngsters in
the audience.
Su's Hi-De-Hi! co-star Walsall-born
Jeffrey Holland also excels as Alderman
Fitzwarren, while one scene sees Su and
Jeffrey reuniting as their sitcom
characters Polly and Spike.

Stourbridge News: Dick Whittington Review
Comedy
legend Su Pollard headline's the
Wolverhampton Grand's 'Dick Whittington'
as the villainous 'Queen Rat'
Comically
dressed as Boris Johnson, impressionist
Aaron James struts across the
Grands slightly-canted boards,
promising the audience hes
going to fix this mess.
Hes talking, it transpires, about
his hair. Naturally..
... Much of the humour comes courtesy of
a very game cast, perhaps most notably
comedy legend Su Pollard chomping and
chewing out every moment on stage as a
tail-swinging, shimmy-shaking and truly
dastardly Queen Rat. Pollard clearly
knows and loves panto inside-out, and is
a blast as the shows villain,
camping it up whilst still injecting it
with enough menace and bombast to be a
boo-hissable adversary for the audience
(old and young alike) to jeer at.

celebrate its first anniversary soon so
we have created a new page for the play.
In August 2018 Su made her Edinburgh
Festival debut! Harpy by Philip Meeks,
saw Su play Birdie - a hoarder - in a
fascinating production, directed by
Hannah Chissick. The play ran for a month
at Underbelly in Cowgate, Edinburgh,
following two London previews, with Su
receiving some of the best reviews of her
career.
Another update to the site - Su's Bio page
has been completely revamped and updated.
We are also working on revising the
Theatre page with more comprehensive info
on Su's impressive theatre roles CV.
