Bits & Pieces!
.Wednesday
29th April, 2009..........................................................Various
As always,
Toyah has been namechecked in a
variety of articles in the last
few weeks: RoundTownNews mentioned her in
their In The Pink For Gay
Pride article late last
week. There's another
Pride-related namecheck by Places2Stay. Toyah was also
mantioned during an Express
& Star interview with Paul
Young earlier in April.
In an article on Alan Cumming in The Scotsman, from mid-April,
Toyah gets a mention as one of
the pop stars he interviewed when
he worked for short-lived
magazine 'Tops' in the early 80s.
And there are also two mentions
in further reports about Quadrophenia:
The Musical, by AllmediaScotland and PR Fire.
Finally, for now, Toyah is
mentioned by Sian Lloyd during an
interview she gave to the Daily Mail on 25th April.
.Queens Of
British Pop - Toyah In Top 10!
.Saturday
25th April, 2009.................................................................Music
Great news!! Toyah
has placed at number seven in the
BBC Queens of British Pop
poll.
The two-part
documentary, that aired last
month (and repeated on BBC4
tonight), chose to not dedicate
any air time atall to Toyah's
contribution to music.
But her ever
faithful fans have ensured she
has been recognised, and included
along with some other legendary
female singers.
1. Kate Bush
2. Annie Lennox
3. Kim Wilde
4. Kylie Minogue
5. Dusty Springfield
6. Leona Lewis
7. Toyah
8. Geri Halliwell
9. Siouxsie Sioux
10. Kirsty MacColl
It's fitting for
this to happen during Toyah's
30th year as a recording artist.
Well done everyone! Well done
Toyah!!

.Rare Toyah
Pictures From 1979/1997
.Thursday
23rd April, 2009.............................................................Pictures
Some rare photos of
Toyah have recently appeared
online.
The first couple are from
February 1979 and see Toyah
pictured "relaxing in her
studio at Battersea" - These
appear to have been taken at
Toyah's legendary warehouse,
Mayhem, a little while after the
filming of Quadrophenia.
The other photographs are from
1997, taken at Toyah's Chiswick
home for something called
"Body Image". I'm
unsure if this was a TV show or
press article.
Unfortunately I
don't have these any larger than
the pictures I've added, but
great photographs from two
interesting Toyah eras all the
same!

Ashes To Ashes... Where Were You
In 1982?
.Tuesday
21st April, 2009...........................................................Press Clips
As Ashes To
Ashes drags us back to a world of
stonewashed jeans and mullets...
Where were YOU in 1982?
We may cringe at our
wardrobes from 1982, a year in
which lace gloves, legwarmers,
and stonewashed denim featured
heavily, but Eighties fashion is
back in vogue.
With a new series of Ashes To
Ashes back on television, we go
back to the Eighties to find out
who were those heroes of
yesteryear and what they remember
about those multicoloured days.
TOYAH WILLCOX
Fashion icon of the time was
Toyah Willcox, 50, named Best
British Singer at the Rock and
Pop Awards (now the Brits). She
says:
Back In 1982, I was recognised
everywhere I went - I had the
big, pink hair, and I dressed the
part in black PVC boots and
little dresses. My nightmare
would have been to have been seen
without full make-up.
Post-punk was moving into New
Wave and New Romanticism, you
lived the dream and wore the
uniform every day, that was part
of the movement. My schedule was
exhausting.
When we shot the
award-winning Brave New World
video, in which I wore black
contact lenses (wearing different
coloured contact lenses was very
'in' in 1982) I was up at 2am in
make-up, then posing on a
freezing beach in Hastings at
4am.
I was then driven
into London where I was shot
riding a horse at Battersea power
station until four in the
afternoon. Then we filmed through
the night at Wandsworth studio -
and I had a concert the next day.
For me, 1982 was a
year that empowered women. I
loved the fashion - at last
British women ditched all those
boring Laura Ashley prints.
Huge shoulder pads were in,
thanks to Joan Collins in
Dynasty, and London was the
hippest place to be, thanks to
designers such as Vivienne
Westwood and Katharine Hamnett.
Perhaps my most spectacular stage
outfit was the one I wore to sing
Thunder In The Mountains on Top
Of The Pops.
I had 2ft-high hair
in the shape of a sunflower,
thigh-length black PVC boots and
a black suede cavewoman dress.
For one shoot, when I had almost
vertical pink hair, it took me 12
hours to get ready. In that year,
you felt you could wear anything,
the sky was the limit.
Make-up was also outrageous - I
went through a period of wearing
cubist designs on my face. Boys
and girls dressed alike - men
looked like peacocks in their
make-up and over-sized shirts.
In terms of politics, Margaret
Thatcher typified the 'can-do'
role of women, though I didn't
agree with her policies. It was
an important year for women, as
we were starting to be taken
seriously in our own right.

resounding success.
I recommend every family,
young and old, to visit this

experience not only fine arts but
also the friendliness of this
historic town.
As an actress, I love
outdoor performances and it is an
exciting prospect to know that

will be the perfect way to
celebrate the summer.
The festival will run from

Not just one but SIX
massive stars are coming to
Whitehaven for a mammoth pop
concert.
The incredible
line-up will feature Eighties
legends Belinda Carlisle, Midge
Ure, Paul Young and Rick Astley
as well as Toyah and Curiosity
Killed the Cat.
It will take place
at Whitehavens sports
stadium, Hensingham, on August 15
and tickets are now on sale.
The hugely
successful Here And Now shows
have sold out big arenas such as
Wembley and the likes of Ascot.
They bring the best of the stars
of the Eighties together for a
night of pure, feel-good
nostalgia.
It is a massive coup
for organisers, Whitehaven
Festival Company, who wanted to
build on last years
successful Status Quo gig.
Promoter Gerard Richardson said:
It is going to be
absolutely incredible, a complete
and utter party night.
We looked at a
number of different acts and
different styles such as
classical or rock and in the
process of talking to agents we
heard about Here and Now,
he said. They are selling
out stadiums all over the place
and we could not resist it. They
had one spare date and said they
would come up to
Whitehaven.
The main six acts
will perform separately between
around 7.30pm and 10.30pm, and
there may also be some support
bands.

3 Women film makers doing it for
themselves
.Wednesday
1st April, 2009.......................................................Press Clips
What do you
do when you turn 50 and find that
no one is making feature films
for you anymore? Yvonne
Deutschman, Ann Cameron and
Thereza Snyman decided
theyd make a film for
themselves. Filming on their low
budget feature, The Power of 3,
begins in April and will be
premiered in London in the
Autumn.
Back in 2004 Canadian Ann
Cameron, British Director Yvonne
Deutschman and South African
entrepreneur Thereza Snyman
discussed the fact that no-one
was making movies for older
female audiences
We realised that no one was
making movies for people like us
so the inevitable question was -
what are we going to do about
it?
They turned an original idea into
a script, while Yvonne started
canvassing support amongst her
contacts in the UK. It was
really exciting to talk to people
about our concept says
Yvonne. Women immediately
related to the story, became
excited about our idea and
started asking how they could be
involved.
Thereza Snyman was tasked with
putting the business side of
things together.
No-one in the traditional
film-funding market was going to
fund a project like this
everybody was going to tell us
why it couldnt be done, so
we decided to do it our
way, said Thereza.
And their way
is a very simple concept.
Theyve gathered a dynamic
group of film professionals and
given them a share of the
proceeds according to the
contribution they make. Sharing
equity in the film has appealed
to like-minded Baby Boomer
spirits, attracting well-known
actors and film professionals
alike. Everyone involved
takes ownership of the project,
because they are the
project states Thereza. -
The enthusiasm and
commitment is amazing
One of Britains biggest
household names Toyah Willcox is
starring in the film along with
Brumilda van Rensburg, a multi
award winning actress from
Johannesburg and Robin Craig, an
award winning Canadian actress.
The supporting cast is just as
impressive. Shirley Anne Field -
(My Beautiful Laundrette, Hear my
Song); Margaret Nolan -
(Goldfinger); Kara Wilson- (Jane
Eyre); Ellen Collier- (The
Office) and with Hilton McCrae
and Richard Bremmer appearing as
the male interest
all share the can do
buzz that this film is
creating.
The Power of 3 is a light-hearted
feel-good comedy that follows the
adventures of 3 friends who pool
their strengths when the going
gets tough. The story is
all about our shared
experiences, says Ann,
weve all been there,
and we all look at life in the
same way
Yvonne Deutschman concludes,
The Power of 3 follows in
the wake of Calendar Girls and
Mama Mia. If wed been doing
this two years ago we
wouldnt have had as much
interest, but now the over
50s is rapidly becoming a
proven film going audience.
